The General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Justin Kodua Frimpong, has admitted the party is dissatisfied with its performance in the 2024 general elections, citing significant voter apathy among the party’s traditional support base.
In an interview on Peace FM’s Kokrokoo morning show with host Nana Yaw Kesseh, Mr. Kodua revealed that the NPP garnered 4,877,619 votes, representing 26% of the total voter population, compared to the National Democratic Congress (NDC), which secured 6,591,790 votes or 35% of the approximately 18 million registered voters.
Mr. Kodua noted a sharp decline in the NPP’s voter turnout compared to 2020, when the party secured over 6 million votes. “This tells us that about 2.5 million of our supporters didn’t vote, likely due to frustration or anger,” he explained.
“We are not happy with the outcome, he stated, further emphasising that the party has established a committee to investigate the reasons behind the low turnout among its supporters. According to him, the current economic challenges have contributed to growing dissatisfaction, suggesting that public disappointment in the NPP has become so deep that “Ghanaians no longer complain under the NDC regime.”
Mr. Kodua also referenced recent remarks by NPP flagbearer Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, who during a press conference, acknowledged the party’s poor performance and emphasised the need for unity as they work toward regaining public trust.
