The Minority Health Caucus has criticised the Health Minister for dismissing the CEO of Tamale Teaching Hospital without due process.
Minister of Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, yesterday, April 22, 2025, sacked the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Tamale Teaching Hospital, Dr Adam Atiku, after a visit to the facility over an alleged negligence death of a patient.
The minority in a statement issued by its Ranking Member, Dr Ayew Afriyie, argued that the dismissal violates constitutional and administrative safeguards, as the CEO’s removal requires presidential consultation with the Council of State.
To them, the minister's actions must be condemned.
“We are also compelled to point out that the Minister’s actions were not only unlawful but also emotionally charged and rash.” A portion of the statement said.
The statement further said, "The Minority Caucus further calls on the Ghana Medical Association, the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association, the Pharmaceutical Society of Ghana,
The Health Services Workers Union, and all relevant professional bodies within the health sector, to rise in defence of due process and institutional integrity."
“Civil society organisations must also speak boldly to this matter, for the protection of constitutionalism and the independence of public service institutions is a shared civic duty. The sanctity of Ghana’s public health institutions must be preserved, and the demoralisation of our healthcare professionals halted.”
The Minority also called for the reversal of the decision and an apology from the Minister.
