Minister for Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams, has dismissed claims that he is withholding the budget for Ghana’s World Cup qualifiers against Chad and Madagascar, played in March.
The issue has drawn public interest following President John Mahama’s State of the Nation Address in February, where he called for transparency in government expenditure on national teams. The President also directed the Sports Ministry to ensure accountability from the Ghana Football Association (GFA) regarding the two matches.
However, more than three weeks after the games, the Ministry has yet to publish details of the budget.
Speaking to Channel One News, Adams said there is no attempt to conceal the information.
"You will know it when the time comes,” he said. “I’m saying that I will make it public. Has the National Team ceased playing?"
"We have the next assignment in September; we have matches that we’re going to play, and we will surely make it public."
He added that it would be premature to release what he described as a draft document. “It will be unfair to make a draft budget public. I’m not hiding it,” he stated.
The Black Stars will next face Chad and Mali in September in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers. Ghana currently leads Group I with 15 points, three ahead of Comoros.
