Some traders operating along pavements within the central business district of Kumasi have responded to the Kumasi Mayor's two-week ultimatum to vacate their place of trade or face sanctions, including being lashed in public.
The traders told Joy News in an interview that the approach by the new mayor if implemented would cause more chaos than peace.
They urged him to solve the situation amicably rather than the hash approach.
“Yes, where we are now is not the appropriate place for us to trade but it's due to some circumstances. We will leave if they ask us to but for the mayor to say he will flog us with his men is unfortunate. We are not animals. He dare not.” A trader said.
Another trader, however, wants the mayor to apologise to the traders for this remark.
“We all want the betterment of Asanteman but you can't tell us you will beat us. He should apologize to us,” She said.
According to the Kumasi Mayor, Mr Richard Ofori Agyemang Boadi, starting Wednesday, 16th April 2024, the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) will embark on a two-week decongestion exercise to evict all traders who sell on pavements and along the roadsides.
