New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer hopeful, Kennedy Agyapong, has launched a controversial attack on former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, citing his religious background as a key reason for the party’s electoral defeat.

At a meeting with a group of legal professionals in Kumasi, where he sought their support for his second attempt to become the NPP’s flagbearer, Agyapong argued that the party should not re-elect Dr Bawumia. He claimed that his Islamic faith had negatively impacted the party’s electoral fortunes, alleging that some Christian leaders had actively campaigned against him on religious grounds.

According to Agyapong, these Christian leaders discouraged their congregations from voting for a Muslim candidate, which he suggested played a significant role in the party’s loss. He further asserted that this challenge would persist as long as Dr Bawumia remained the NPP’s candidate.

However, several attendees at the meeting dismissed Agyapong’s claims as unfounded and divisive. Some insisted that available electoral data did not support his assertions, rejecting his arguments as baseless.
