A key member of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), Nana Obiri Boahen says President John Dramani Mahama did the right thing by changing the Inspector General of Police (IGP) despite backlash from individuals and organizations.
He said the move was necessary for him to have a trusted security team to ensure a smooth government.
“Ideally that is the best, It is dangerous to maintain an IGP in office with a new government.” He told NEAT FM's political talk show, ‘Me Man Nti’ in an interview.
The Inspector General of Police under the erstwhile Akufo-Addo's regime, Dr George Akuffo Dampare was ‘sacked’ from his post by President John Dramani Mahama in a shakeup of his security team.
Many argued that the dismissal of Dampare was “unfair”, with others citing that his professionalism and leadership ensured the outstanding policing Ghana has ever experienced.
But to the few, the former police capo rather divided the police leadership with ‘unreasonable’ measures.
Nana Obiri Boahen, however, maintained that it would have been “dangerous” for the new Mahama-led government to keep Dr George Akuffo Dampare.
